Prep days
The two days before the congress, we gather to bring things up - carry in equipment, build the Mate wall, set up lights, organize the chairs and tables, set up the window covers... We work from around noon, till the evening.
Congress days - this is when we need the most of you!
Roles rotate throughout the day. Shifts run from around 10am to midnight, and no one is expected to be there the whole time — we share shifts and agree on a schedule beforehand. Typical roles include:
Entrance
Must be covered by someone at all times. Volunteers check that everyone entering has this year's BalCCon bracelet. The shift runs until around 4am, so if you're a night owl, we'd love your help here.
Camera duty
Sitting behind the camera to help the media team start/stop/adjust the recordings of sessions.
Mic duty
We need to announce each speaker before their presentation, as well as provide a microphone around the audience during the Q&A.
Misc
Keep the venue clean, fix what needs fixing, help speakers and guests, and enjoy the congress!
Cleanup day
The day after the congress, a few of us gather to disassemble the sets, carry things out and drive them back to storage. This is a couple hours in the morning.

FAQ
Do I have to be there all the time?
No, we all need rest. Ideally, you can come in most days for a few hours. If you have any limits regarding this that you know beforehand (i.e. “I can’t come in on workdays at all”), note them in your application.
How do I know what I do when?
We will maintain a schedule, so it will be clear who has what shift where.
What if I have to skip my shift?
Find another volunteer to cover for you — the volunteer lead can help you arrange this.
What’s a Mate wall?
A wall of beer crates with LEDs, built as a screen. We connect the crates with zip ties and set up each pixel (bottle hole) with paper and an LED, by hand.
